Bass Tournament Canceled for First Time

The 9th Annual Martin County United Way Invitational Two Day Team Bass Fishing Tournament scheduled Aug. 2-3, 2003, on the Roanoke River, was canceled.

Organizers made the decision due to continued high water and low oxygen levels in the Roanoke River and the low number of teams pre-registered. Water still covers the Wildlife Boat Ramp at the US 17 bridge, making it difficult for boats to get in and out of the river.

This is the first time the tournament has been canceled since its inception, having survived Hurricanes Floyd and Dennis in 1999 and a fish kill in 1995.

“Canceling the tournament was not something we wanted to do, but we believe it was the best decision for everyone involved,” said Crystal Baity, executive director of Martin County Travel & Tourism and an organizer of the tournament.

Plans are already underway for next year’s tournament, which will be held Aug. 7-8, 2004.

The catch-and-release tournament fielded 60 teams from across eastern North Carolina in 2002. The event has raised $8,000 for the United Way in the past eight years.

Martin County Travel & Tourism and the Martin County Chamber of Commerce sponsor the tournament with support from the Down East Bass Anglers Fishing Club.  For more information on Martin County, go to www.visitmartincounty.com or call 800-776-8566.
