Herring Festival is 61...and proud of it!

For 61 year locals, former residents and many from North Carolina and other states have gathered in Jamesville on the banks of the Roanoke River to celebrate the importance of this boney but delicious annual visitor.

Especially during the depression of the 1920s, "corned herring",  cornbread and collard biscuits carried the people of this area through rough times.

Even though it's against the law to catch them here now, we celebrate their importance and anticipate the day that they will be deemed officially plentiful to feed us again. You can still get some tasty South Carolina herrings cooked up crispy at local restaurants. So come on to Jamesville and enjoy the party!

See the website for more details and don't miss this traditional way to welcome springtime!
